In 1981 John Nemjo purchased his first canoe from a friend in northeast Florida. His love of paddling grew from there as he spent the next 12 years exploring the many yet unspoiled streams, rivers and springs throughout the state. He brought that love of paddling and of the outdoors with him to the Adirondacks in 1993 when he opened his first Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company (MOSC) store in an abandoned pizza shop in the small village of Inlet, New York. Today, Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company is comprised of three individual specialty shops in Old Forge, just 10 miles south of the original store. Each store is a destination all its own and can help you with all your Adirondack wilderness and vacation needs.
Since the beginning Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company has committed itself to educating and outfitting customers to fully enjoy the natural wonders of the Adirondacks and other special places throughout the country. Our staff is dedicated to assisting you find the clothing, gear or boat that you will suit your needs and budget. Our goal is to make everyone’s travels in the wilderness a safe and rewarding experience. In addition, MOSC is active in the protection of the environment both within and beyond the Adirondack Park to preserve our natural heritage for generations to come.

In 2007 we combined our Inlet and Old Forge paddling shops into one paddlesports super store giving us a one-stop location to satisfy everyone’s paddling needs. Located on the beautiful Moose River in Old Forge, NY this store focuses entirely on paddlesports with a full selection of recreational, touring, whitewater and sit-on-top canoes and kayaks. You can now browse through our entire inventory of over 1,000 canoes and kayak in one location. We’ll also set you up with any paddling accessories you need from paddles, to life jackets and safety gear, to complete car rack systems and trailers to help you get your new boats to the water safely and securely. With over 20 brands of canoes and kayaks to choose from and the chance to test paddle before you buy, why shop anywhere else.
Adirondack Outdoor Center Outdoor Gear and Clothing Shop
Located right next door to our award winning canoe and kayak shop is our Outdoor Gear and Clothing Store sometimes known as the Adirondack Outdoor Center. Originally purchased in 2005 we have just finished our complete remodeling inside and out and now have over 4,000 square feet of retail space dedicated to high end gear and clothing for everyone’s outdoor needs. We also sell and rent cross-country skis and snowshoes in winter and have a complete bike shop with sales, service and rentals. Our newly expanded book and map section will also be something to check out next time you come through the Adirondacks.
